Throughout most of my life, I have struggled with both alcohol and drug addiction. I was alienated from my friends and family. During periods of clarity, I was successful in business.

In life, I was surrounded by people, but I felt isolated and alone — and far from God. My sister and her husband, both Christians strong in faith, and elders in their community, have encouraged me throughout my spiritual journey.

Poor choices and bad decisions made while in an active addiction led to imprisonment. It was there that I began Bible study correspondence courses.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Through the Bible studies, I’ve grown both spiritually and personally. I am obligated by the truths and to live up to its standards. From a dark and chaotic past, my spiritual journey has brought me into God’s light. I have drawn strength from Psalm 23 and Proverbs 3:3-6.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 has shown me the importance of a faith community. I can’t make this spiritual journey along; I need others in my life for friendship, counsel, and guidance.

1 Peter 1:8-9 and 13-16, and 3:10-12 speaks to the trust I must place in God, and the mindful living that speaks to that trust. Philippians 4:8 is an affirmation to that rightful living.

“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”

I am comforted by Philippians 4:13: “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” This reminds me most of my ethical commitments and spiritual goals. I gain spiritual strength through practices of giving, patience, and moral discipline with an awareness to my motivations, intentions, and attitudes.

Great Truths of the Bible introduced me to and brought me closer to God in a manner and format I could understand. The letters of encouragement from my mentors showed me the love of a faith community.

1st John 1:8 says “… For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.” That encapsulates my life, right here, right now. I’m walking in the right direction, to the right destination, and so can you.
